Thank you for your interest in the
137th N.Y.V.I. Co. F. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or new to the hobby, we're sure you'll enjoy our group. In order
to join us, you should take the following steps:
What do you need to get started? Well, this
can be an expensive hobby, so it's best to build up your gear slowly. The prices
shown are approximate and are to the nearest $5.
Basic Uniform
four button sack coat ($65)
forage cap ($25)
three button shirt ($25)
trousers ($50)
suspenders ($10)
belt and buckle ($20)
rag wool socks ($10)
brogans (shoes)($85)
canteen ($35)

This will allow you to participate in
encampments and to take to the field as a flag bearer. Sutler Supply
Sells a new recruits package for $179.
Once you have a uniform, it's time to think
about purchasing a firearm. We use authentic reproductions that are
fully functional black powder muskets. If you hunt, these rifles can be
used during black-powder season. The prices shown are about mid-range for each
model.
Musket
Model 1853 .57 cal. Enfield ($420)
Model 1861 .58 cal. Springfield ($500)
Total: ~$800
(depending on rifle)
You might think that this would allow you to
take to the field, but if you buy a musket, that's all you have - a musket. You
need the accessories to go along with it.
Musket Accessories
cartridge box ($40)
cartridge box sling ($15)
musket sling ($15)
cap box ($15)
bayonet ($30)
bayonet frog ($10)
breast plate ($5)
Total:
~$930
Since you'll probably be buying most of this
stuff online, don't forget to allow for shipping and handling. So, for around
$1000, you'll be fully equipped to take to the field.
While I generally detest web
pages with music, I thought it might be fun to include some links to a few
popular Civil War songs. The music and lyrics are courtesy of the Civil War Midi
Page.
The lyrics are presented in their original form, and may
not be politically correct. The music files are only the first two verses and
choruses, if there are any.
